Interactive Session Plan™

Objective: Learning to control the ball in tight spaces and at speed

No. of Players: 8 to 12

Area/Field: Half-Court 

Time: 5 to 10 Minutes

Equipment: Balls, Discs/Cones

Organization: Players can dribble/pass the ball following the patterns suggested by the coach.

Instructions: Tell the players to be quick and in rhythm.

Coaching Points: Keep eyes on court and try to watch the ball as little as possible.

Variations: Competitive game; who is the first to successfully to do the suggested pattern. Have the winning player suggest the next pattern for all other players to do. Have the players pass the ball, in addition to dribbling.

Objective: Learning to finish with play into Pivo

No. of Players: 6 to 10

Area/Field: Half-Court

Time: 10 to 15 Minutes

Equipment: Balls, Pinnies, and Discs/Cones

Organization: Players look to transition and score through playing to Pivo

Instructions: Tell the players to communicate, control the ball, move off the ball, be quick and in rhythm. 

Coaching Points: Make fast change of directions. Control with ball with purpose when in possession. Tell goalkeeper to cut angles and force difficult shots and apprehension by the attackers. Tell attackers to remain far apart.

Variations: Competitive game; have games last a certain length and keep track of score. Use different types of restarts.

Objective: Learning to finish and transition in numbers-up (3v1 & 3v2 + GK) situation

No. of Players: 6 to 10

Area/Field: Half-Court

Time: 15 to 20 Minutes

Equipment: Balls, Pinnies, and Discs/Cones

Organization: Players look to transition and score through dynamic movement

Instructions: Tell the players to communicate, control the ball, move off the ball, be quick and in rhythm. 

Coaching Points: Make fast change of directions. Control with ball with purpose when in possession. Tell goalkeeper to cut angles and force difficult shots and apprehension by the attackers. Tell attackers to remain far apart.

Variations: Competitive game; have games last a certain length and keep track of score. Use different types of restarts.

Objective: Learning how to defend in 4-0 / 3-1 system

No. of Players: 10

Area/Field: Full-Court

Time: 20 to 25 Minutes

Equipment: Balls, Pinnies

Organization: Players move defensively in man-to-man/zonal groups suggested by the coach.

Instructions: Tell the players to communicate, control the ball, move off the ball, be quick and in rhythm.

Coaching Points: Make fast change of directions. Accelerate to the ball when covering your man. Keep eyes on court and try to watch the ball as much as possible.

Variations: Competitive game; have a series of 10 restarts in same way (goal clearance, kick-off, kick-in, corner kick) and give points for positive results (1 point for stop, 2 points for steal, 3 points for steal and goal). Switch roles.

Objective: Play a simulated match using different types of balls

No. of Players: 10

Area/Field: Full-Court

Time: 20 to 25 Minutes

Equipment: Ball, Pinnies

Organization: Players look to better understand the game by playing with a rotating size of balls (size 4, size 3, tennis).

Instructions: Tell the players to make every decision matter.

Coaching Points: Keep emphasizing that mastering the rules will help players in manipulating the rules to their advantage.

Variations: Competitive game; have each ball size be worth a different number of points for a goal (size 4 = 1 point, size 3 = 2 points, tennis = 3 points). Rotate the balls every time a goal is scored. Play to a certain number of points or a timed game. Have each team designate a captain who can call timeouts and decide substitution patterns. Games last a certain length and switch players and roles at end of each.
